How do I know if I have a gas leak?
Obviously a gas leak can present a very dangerous situation. Even if you have a slight suspicion there is a gas leak at your premises, it is imperative to take immediate action. Below are some signs to look out for.
- Smell of gas - there is good reason they put an artificial scent (Ethyl Mercaptan) in both LPG and natural gas which is otherwise odorless - if you smell gas you know there is a leak.
- Gas bill increase - if your gas bill increases suddenly compared to previous months for no particular reason, this could signify a leak somewhere.
- Hissing sounds - if your gas appliances like a cooktop, oven, heater etc. are making a hissing sound when turned off, this means there is a leak in the connection or line somewhere
- Pilot light changes - if you have a gas hot water system and the pilot light changes colour or keeps going out, you likely have a leak.
- Dead vegetation - often when there is a leak in gas pipes under or near your lawns or gardens, the escaping gas will cause vegetation to die and deteriorate.
- Gas poisoning - if you or your family start experiencing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, fatigue etc. this could be attributed to gas poisoning from a leak.
